Volkswagen has announced that from the second quarter of 2024 it will have standard equipment ChatGPT for their new cars. This is a logical evolution in relation to the current voice assistants, which in recent years have improved, for example, to include the use of natural language instead of artificial messages that had to be used not long ago to interact with them.
Currently, the IDA voice assistant used by Volkswagens can be used for many functions, from climate control or the multimedia system to answering questions on various topics. However, with the integration of ChatGPT through Cerence Chat Pro, interaction will be taken to the next level, be able to clarify the doubts that the residents have, strengthen the dialogue or provide high levels of informationgive examples.
Its use will be very easy and the user will not have to do anything different from what they have done so far. To activate it, just say it “Hello, IDA.” or press the corresponding button on the steering wheel.
In addition, due to the privacy concerns that such a system can generate, the German brand notes that ChatGPT You will not be able to access any vehicle information and that all questions and answers provided will be deleted immediately to ensure the highest level of protection possible.
The first group of models selected to include this new functionality are Volkswagen Golf (whose update is shown, hidden, in GTI format), Volkswagen Passat, Volkswagen Tiguan and almost the entire electric family of the company: ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.7.
Kai Grünitz, Volkswagen Board Member for Technical Development, explains: “Volkswagen has always democratized technology and made it accessible to the masses. This is embedded in our DNA. Now we are the first volume manufacturer to make this innovative technology a standard feature in cars from small parts onwards.”
For his part, Stefan Ortmanns, CEO of Cerence, says: “With Cerence Chat Pro, Volkswagen has a ChatGPT integration that provides flexibility, customization and convenience enforcement, while prioritizing driver safety and usability.”
The integration of ChatGPT in Volkswagen vehicles represents an important step in the development of voice assistants. The ability of this artificial intelligence structure to produce natural and fluid conversations, as well as to provide relevant and up-to-date information, makes it a very important tool for drivers.
