2nd generation Mitsubishi ASX
Renault Captur gives back
Petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid
Sale in March 2023
Internet Mitsubishi desperately need cars for sale. The range of Japanese manufacturers in France, a member of the Renault/Nissan/Mitsubishi alliance, is practically reduced to a minimum today. celestial star, Eclipse cross, L200no example makes a large amount.
To correct the situation, solutions are needed. And there is one all available. Use designs that already exist within the union, and re-badge them. This has the advantage of being able to deliver new models quickly and at low cost.
And Mitsubishi will dig a vein in 2023. In the summer, the three-diamond brand will present a new Coltwhich will be only one Renault Clio rebadged, but before that, it is the second generation ofASX which is presented. You have it in front of you.
And we tell you directly, we did not expect that when the curtain was raised on this “novelty”.
We really expected a revised design, and why was it not thoroughly revised by the Tokyo company. But we were at our own expense. Hide the logo on the grille, and you have a Renault Captur. The point bar. The ASX will also come out like him from the Spanish factory in Valladolid.
So let’s play a game of 7 differences, if possible … Because small changes are rare and related to detail.
The front panel has the Mitsubishi logo for any modification instead of a diamond, in the center of the grille mask which adds small chrome fins on either side of the logo. The product talks about “Mitsubishi’s iconic “Dynamic shield” front face”, which is … clearly insulting.
In profile, only the mouthpieces are different, and the doors feature, on the presented hybrid model, the “EV” badge found on the Eclipse Cross for example.
Finally, at the back, the Renault logo disappears and the “Captur” lettering is replaced by “Mitsubishi”.
And that’s for body work. You see, we don’t even get to the difference of 7. And it is, we repeat, disappointing. We would have appreciated more contrast, so that this new ASX gives off its own identity, and closer to that of Mitsubishi.
It should be noted in passing that by taking the size of Renault, to within 1 mm, the ASX, which was the smallest of the two groups (urban and compact SUV) with its 4.37 m, now becomes a real urban SUV. , with a height of 4.23 m.
In the cabin, not a little different
Inside, it is “uglier” than outside. Only the coat of arms in the middle of the steering wheel changes, as well as the images of the car in the multimedia system. The rest is 100% pure diamond juice. But is that a downside?
Not amust. When it was released, the Renault sedan was (very) well received. We suddenly find a cabin certainly without stylistic exuberance, but very well built, with quality materials, which propels ASX directly in the top basket of the category at this level.
The rear seating position is correct in terms of legroom and headroom, and the sliding bench seat is cleverly accommodated. It makes it possible to adjust the volume of the boot, which goes from 332 liters with the rear bench seat to 401 liters with the front bench seat at the highest level. This is less than the old ASX, which produced 419 liters. Losing 14 cm of height really has consequences.
Equipment on the level
The equipment is also designed according to that of the “donors”, and the international represents the best in the category. So we can get, as standard or as an option (the ranges are not yet fully defined): keyless entry and start, 10.3-inch digital instruments (on the range only, otherwise 4, 2 or 7 inches), exit warning through road, blind vehicle warning, distance warning from the vehicle in front, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, MI-PILOT (autonomous driving level 2 that combines intuitive cruise control and assistance lane focus), Bose sound system, wireless playback of Android Auto or Apple Car Play Phone, “Multi-sense” driving mode selector (Eco, Pure (for hybrid), Sport or sense Mine), but also steering wheel and heated seats, 3D navigation, or climate. lights in 8 colors to choose from.
Wide choice of engines, 100% petrol, hybrid or PHEV
Technically, what a surprise, we get all the Captur engines. So there is no diesel, but a petrol engine 100 hp 3-cylinder (160 Nm, 132 to 136 g of CO2/km) and 140 hp 1.3 micro-hybrid 4-cylinder ( manual gearbox, 260 Nm, 130 to 134 g of CO2 /km) or 160 hp (automatic gearbox, 270 Nm, 131 to 137 g of CO2/km). Then we move on to more electric blocks, with a 4-cylinder 1.6 petrol powered by two electric motors, one of which serves as a generator. The simple hybrid version produces 145 hp (multimode dog gearbox, 1.3 kWh hybrid battery, from 107 to 113 g of CO2/km) and its hybrid version 160 hp (10.5 kWh hybrid battery that allows 100 % electric range of 47 to 49 km in the WLTP combined cycle and 62 to 63 km in the urban cycle, for emissions of 30 to 31 grams of CO2/km).
With such a choice, however, the ASX 2 covers most of the market’s needs, and the choice is wide enough to suit everyone.
The tests of this new participant in the category of urban SUVs are planned for the beginning of the year 2023. They should not reserve any great surprises in terms of power, knowing that nothing has been passed at the level of the Renault platform.
It also remains to discover the prices of this “Franco-Japanese” novel. We hope they will be more attractive than those of Captur, or other competitors like Peugeot 2008Ya Volkswagen T-Roc where Toyota Yaris Cross, otherwise the ASX would be completely doomed to remain in the shadows. It can only be used to retain old customers of the previous generation of ASX within the brand. But if it is cheap, and also supported by a 5-year/100,000 km warranty (unlimited mileage for the first 2 years), it can come and grab some customers in that segment. Those whose marks on the grille do not matter, in short.
The sale will take place in March 2023.
