JAKARTA – Monday tomorrow (15/5/2023), PT Toyota Astra Motor is preparing to launch its seventh SUV or crossover. It is believed that the new car is Toyota Yaris Cross.
The Toyota Yaris Cross makes Toyota the Japanese automaker that sells the most SUVs right now. For information, Toyota has a variety of SUVs such as Toyota Corolla Cross, Toyota C-HR, Toyota Raize, Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Rush, and Toyota Land Cruiser.
Quoted by Sindonews.com, the number of SUVs from Toyota exceeds that of other car manufacturers. Daihatsu has only two SUVs, namely Daihatsu Terios and Daihatsu Rocky.
Nissan has only four SUVs, namely Nissan Magnite, Nissan X-Trail, Nissan Terra and Nissan Kicks e-Power. Suzuki has only two SUVs, namely Suzuki Jimny and Suzuki Grand Vitara.
Honda, which is currently in third place in the national car market, has only four models, namely Honda CR-V, Honda HR-V, Honda WR-V and Honda BR-V.
At the same time, the Mitsubishi manufacturer has three SUVs, which are Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Mitsubishi Xpander Cross and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
Mazda, which often focuses on SUVs, even loses a lot to Toyota. On Mazda’s official website, there are only five SUVs, namely Mazda CX-3, Mazda CX-30, Mazda CX-5, Mazda CX-8 and Mazda CX-9.
SUV Flood Lovers, Shift in Consumer Tastes
A large number of SUVs flooded the Indonesian car market due to changing consumer tastes. It is believed that consumers prefer SUVs over MPVs.
According to GAIKINDO data, from 2017 to 2021 the sales of SUVs have experienced a significant increase from 15% in 2017 to 26% in 2021.
At the same time, the MPV and LCGC markets are stagnant and slightly down. 2022 SUV brought a surprise, the sales period from January to November 2022 has exceeded the sales of MPV and LCGC.
Meanwhile, retail sales data from GAIKINDO, sales of small SUVs in 2020 were only 54 units. Then in 2021 it will increase to 30,174 units and in 2022 until November there will be 32,353 units.
“From 2017 to 2021, we can see a constant increase (SUV sales) from 15% in 2017 to 26% in 2021. At the same time the MPV and LCGC markets tend to be stagnant, slightly decreasing. We can conclude that SUVs are part with the highest sales,” said Ferdianto Budiono, Product Strategy Manager of PT Honda Prospect Motor.
Consumer acceptance of SUVs is increasing because of the variety offered. Apart from seven-seater SUVs, there are also small SUVs that are predicted to be in demand.
One of the smaller SUVs coming tomorrow is the Toyota Yaris Cross. This car will definitely make Indonesian consumers run out of options for SUVs.
