It took a while, but the list of the best-selling cars in the world last year has finally been released. With a strong presence of Japanese brands and almost no presence of cars made only in Brazil in the top 100, some numbers were surprising.
Posted by Automotive Industry Analysis, the ranking revealed the dominance of SUVs among the best-selling cars in the world last year. The proof of this is that the best-selling car in the world and the only one that sold more than 1 million units was an SUV: specifically the Toyota RAV4.
In the top 10 we have four SUVs, four sedans (three medium) and two trucks (one medium and one large). It is interesting to note that Toyota dominates with its cars. After all, it has the world’s best-selling SUV and car (RAV4), the champion among sedans (Corolla), the best-selling large sedan (Camry) and the number one truck (Hilux).
But the biggest surprise at the beginning of the year was the Tesla Model Y. The SUV became the best-selling electric car in the world after jumping from 19th in 2021 to 3rd in last year’s overall position. Tesla still has the Model 3 in 10th place as the best-selling electric sedan in 2022.
The dominance of SUVs and Japanese
If we analyze the top 100 as a whole, we have SUV as the main category, representing 49 positions in total. They are followed by sedans with 23 entries in the range, then by hatches with 13 models, and ending with 4 small cars. But most importantly, there is only one minivan (Suzuki Ertiga) and station wagon (Subaru Outback) on the list.
Among the brands, we have shy Japanese rivals with 35 cars from the land of the rising sun. Kia and Hyundai, the only Koreans on the list, have 12 models. Chinese brands are represented by 10 cars, the best-selling Chinese in 2022 being the BYD Song Plus.
