Peugeot 5008 in Active Pack version with 136 HP hybrid engine came to our editorial office for testing. We intend to drive it more than a thousand kilometers and see how it performs in the city and on the road. What are your first impressions after driving several kilometers?
In this post, I will focus on the engine, because it is completely new to us and we have been waiting for the opportunity to test this car for a long time. A car this big with a 1.2 engine? Only 136 HP? Who will buy? A flood of such and similar comments under this test ad is certain. However, since the manufacturer offers that version, and at the same time it is a new car unit, we start the test without bias, but with an open mind. The first few hours with the new Peugeot 5008 are all about listening to how the new engine works.
1.2 136 HP What is this? Timing chain and electric motor
What unit is this? An upgraded PureTech 1.2 with timing chain, electric motor (with 28 HP and 50 Nm of maximum torque) and a new 6-speed automatic gearbox from Punch Powertrain. System output (total) is 136 HP and 230 Nm of torque.
When you start the engine in the cold, you can’t hear it inside, and you don’t feel that it’s a three-cylinder car. This can be felt in another situation, which I will discuss in a moment. Calming and working on vibrations is a big advantage here.
The capacity of the traction battery is 0.89 kWh, of which 0.432 kWh is available. This solution was used to extend its service life – it is expected to last the entire life of the car. The small capacity means that it can be charged quickly and the energy is quickly restored, and the car clearly promotes electric driving, but because of the battery it replaces the combustion car many times – and it does it without being noticed.

The engine can sometimes be louder or even louder
What? when does the engine start to roar and can you guess it’s a three cylinder unit? Time to hurry up. There is no delay here, but as soon as we reach more than 2,500 revolutions (yes, there is a tachometer!), You can immediately hear the characteristic sound of the three-cylinder engine. It’s not offensive, many people even like it – but it’s there.
The gearbox works well when accelerating – there is no jumping or shaking, and in this respect it can be compared to the EAT8, at least after the several kilometers that I have traveled. We will see what happens next.
Quiet and smooth
The gearbox itself works smoothly and quietly. Without the radio on, you will hear a very quiet hum, eg when you let off the gas. It’s not disturbing or offensive, I mention this out of journalistic responsibility. Peugeot 5008 with this engine weighs 1.6 tons (including the driver), so we can’t expect any better dynamics, but that’s not why we choose such a version – it’s a car for quiet transportation in urban conditions with children. You can go out of town from time to time.
5.5 liters per 100 kilometers during normal driving in a big city
Well, 1.6 tons and 136 HP – and how much does it burn? It turns out that when driving in normal mode (no Eco or Sport) you can reach less than 6 liters. For a distance of 50 km around Warsaw (mainly traffic and residential roads, a few kilometers of the highway) I managed to achieve a record of 5.5 liters per 100, but I would like to say that this is the result from the computer – it is. it was a very short distance to fill peugeot. I’m talking about normal everyday driving, and instead of using the brakes, I let off the gas. Then the car braked itself properly. Once I learned how to deal with stopping gas, I drove very economically. So it occurred to me that a short tutorial on using the hybrid would be useful for some testers.
It all sounds. And what is the loss?
I would like to say that all these feelings come after a short distance for us – 50 km around the city is nothing. I write them while sitting in the car. The 1.2 PureTech 136 HP drive is an improved unit compared to the previous generation – firstly, it is a hybrid, secondly, it has a timing chain. Many features, including the chest, are new here. You will have to wait for higher mileage to see how it works.
What can be a loss for today? In the Peugeot 5008, this engine requires an additional payment of PLN 7,700 compared to the 1.2 PureTech 130 HP with automatic. That’s a lot. And now let’s compare it with another car: for PLN 182,000 you can have a proven and economical HDi diesel with a power of 130 HP, also with automatic transmission. Diesel can be interesting here because it will provide low fuel consumption, and its characteristics are more suitable for a large body (we are talking about 5008).
This hybrid will make sense if someone drives a lot and short distances around the city. The bus is very economical – I must admit that the result of 5.5 liters per 100 km surprised me a lot. I would like to emphasize once again that I drove normally, in the usual Warsaw style (anyone who has been to the capital knows what it looks like), but I used to recover as much energy as possible.
It looks great as a car, but is it suitable for the 5008?
136 HP for a large SUV these days? 1.6 tons + passenger – we will check. The engine itself works well and is quite economical, but I doubt if this is the best solution for such a large car.
If Stellantis wants to attract new customers, who need a little more, there should be a more powerful version of this drive, around 160 HP, or a similar hybrid solution, but based on the 1.6 PureTech. Renault came to this conclusion in the case of the Espace and the 200 horsepower car is very powerful and not afraid of even 7 passengers (which we checked).
That’s all for the start – now we have a route and a trial and a full set of passengers ahead of us. We will see how this engine works under high load. The final test should appear on Francuskie.pl after 10 days, after completing a set of test drives. And there will be some of them!
