Several exciting projects have almost never seen the light of day. This is the case of Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola’s dream project. Francis Ford Coppola himself has mentioned at some point that one of the references of the film is capital, one of the most important works of science fiction in the history of the seventh art. We still don’t know if Megalopolis could achieve the same status, but what is clear is that this is a very ambitious film.

Francis Ford Coppola’s Fantasy Film

The project was born in the early 1980s, but Coppola experienced several commercial problems in this decade, which caused him to postpone it. Megalopolis and work on other titles to get the necessary funding. The director himself admitted in 2007 that this was the reason he agreed to make the film Dracula (1992) and Jack (1996).

In fact, everything indicated that Coppola could fulfill his dream at the beginning of this century, but he encountered another obstacle. The filmmaker had met big stars like Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio, Paul Newman and Nicolas Cage, and had also shot about 30 hours of footage for the film. Then the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 happened and Coppola didn’t know how to react.

The revival of the project, years later

Megalopolis it ended up being abandoned and was considered one of the best films ever made, but Francis Ford Coppola surprised everyone in 2019 when he announced that he was taking on the project. Considering his age – he is already 83 years old – no one would be surprised that this was one of the ads that ultimately failed.

However, it was not so, although Coppola had to put everything on his side in order to Megalopolis can be reached. A multi-million dollar budget – we’re talking about $100 million – went out of pocket, forcing him to sell most of his wine empire.

This cost can be explained by several factors. First the actors where we find among others Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Jason Schwartzman, Shia LaBeouf, Talia Shire and Dustin Hoffman. Another thing that will increase its cost is that the director uses the same Volume LED technology seen inside The Mandalorianin which he promises to introduce methods “never seen before“. In this way, it is possible to film in high-reality sets, but always staying inside the set.

For now, Megalopolis it is in the middle of the filming phase, since the shooting started in November 2022 and is expected to last until March 2023. Then the post-production work will come and there is still no release date, so it is possible that we will not see it. it is before 2024, or even 2025. It will be long!
