Tesla is no longer making right-hand drive versions of its Model S and Model X electric cars. This means that orders for customers in countries that drive on the other side of the road, such as the UK, have been canceled and potential buyers are being told. buy a different model, car from stock or try the left car version.
In about 30% of countries around the world, they drive on the left side of the road. England is perhaps the best known country where this happens, and so are many of its former colonies. While most of these are small countries, the list also includes populous countries such as Japan, Indonesia and India.
A website known for technology Ars Technica reached out to a New Zealand reader who ordered a right-hand drive Model X SUV nearly three years ago after Tesla approached him on May 11 to cancel his order. It gave him a NZD$3,200 (€1,815) loan towards a Model 3 or Model Y, and that’s on the condition that he buys the new model before October.
Although Tesla has no press office to confirm the news, UK Motor vehicle confirms cancellation of right-hand offerings. Customers who canceled orders in the UK are being offered a £2,000 (€2,275) credit towards a Model 3 or Model Y. As a Tesla “representative” told Motor vehicleproduction of the right-handed versions was discontinued for quality control reasons.
As noted several times in the past, demand for the Model S and X is waning as it is overshadowed by new models from startups like Rivian and Lucid, as well as established OEMs like Porsche, BMW, Mercedes and Audi.
In 2022, Tesla built 71,777 Model S and X but only managed to sell 66,705. The situation appears to have worsened this year—in the first quarter of 2023, it built 19,437 S and X models, but nearly half have not been sold.
