In Europe there were many modifications of diesel with engines of 1.7-2.0 liters. In the Russian range, all units are gasoline. The Chevrolet Cruze is built on the General Motors platform called Delta II, common with Opel Astra J cars. The front suspension has McPherson struts and the rear has a torsion beam.
There is only front wheel drive. Depending on the engine, the car can have a five- or six-speed manual gearbox, which is never available in our country (the latter is available for the 1.4 turbo engine and powerful diesel engines). Another option is GM’s 6T30 series six-speed automatic.
Painting It does not differ in thickness and strength. However, the metal underneath is quite good, and even where the chips are easily visible, it is not quick to flower. So the first rust after 7-9 years can usually be found on the inner parts of the doors, where the paint eventually gives dirt and rubber seals. And also on sills and arches that are not well protected by plastic and are subject to sandblasting. Models from the first years of production often get swelling of the painting and rust on the trunk lid.
It does not increase the aesthetics decrease over time bumper trims – slow down their closing speed. And the coating holds rather weakly for the plastic of the bumpers and the fastening brackets for the side mirrors. Chrome decoration of external elements it can start to swell and peel in just 3-5 years.

- After 4-7 years, power windows often fail due to corrosion not only in the buttons, but also in the wiring contacts. Often, the harness mounted behind the trim A-pillar under the driver’s feet suffers – you need to make sure that there is no moisture there.
- The heating elements in the seats can fail so badly that they also burn through the upholstery – fortunately, everything can be changed separately.
- Over time, the head unit may stop seeing the CD, and the parking sensors simply fail.
The climate control unit can attract a lot of attention. After 50 thousand kilometers, the heater fan motor can make noise – often cleaning and lubrication saves the day. But after 80-100,000 km its forests can wear out. And after 100-120,000 km, plastic gears often wear out or damper drive rods break. Repair in this case is a big job. And to replace the stove module you will have to dismantle the front panel.
More than half of all cars have a series of sixteen valves 1.6 F16D3, which Cruz inherited from Chevrolet Lacetti, although it has been updated. The engine has a good service life – about 350,000 km.
It has a timing belt drive, which is recommended to change every 60 thousand kilometers – a broken belt threatens the assembly of pistons and valves. Over time, the valves can become covered with carbon deposits until they are completely closed and catch fire. And the hydraulic compensation in the valve mechanism quickly fails due to dirty oil – it is better to update it before the 15 thousand kilometers required by the regulations.
A chronic engine disease is the leakage of plastic cover seals, which can be seen even after 50 thousand kilometers. In addition to many types of exhaust, oil often overflows into the spark plugs, damaging the high-voltage wires.
After 100 thousand kilometers, leaks in the oil pan, oil filler neck and cylinder head seals are often added. Oxygen sensors and ignition coils can fail. Also, unstable speed is a reason to check the cleanliness of the throat valve.
1.6 F16D4 and 1.8 F18D4
Opel engines of the Ecotec family with a volume of 1.6 liters (about 10% of cars) and 1.8 liters (more than a third of cars) have a service life of 300-350,000 km and a timing belt drive that lasts 90- 120. thousand km.
The valve stem does not have hydraulic compensation – it may be necessary to adjust the gap with washers after 120,000 km. And bad oil mainly affects stuck piston rings, causing oil loss up to a liter per 1000 km.
After 100,000 km, the poles of the CVCP (Variable Camshaft Phasing) timing system can slip. The root cause is usually a phase solenoid control valve with a clogged filter – it must be replaced.
After 80-100,000 km, the electronically controlled thermostat often fails: the operating element fails, the gasket leaks or cracks in the housing, or the built-in fan switch sensor fails. At this time, the gaskets of the heat mixture under the exhaust manifold often leak, which causes the mixing of antifreeze and oil.
After 80-120,000 km, due to the cracking of the housing, the ignition module common to all cylinders fails – if even one coil fails, the entire expensive assembly will have to be replaced. Another reason for the unstable operation of the 1.8 engine is a leaking rubber diaphragm of the crankcase ventilation valve (CVGV), built into the valve cover. It will have to be converted as a collection.
The engine control unit is poorly located in the engine compartment (for example, it is often subjected to careless washing) and may fail due to oxidation of the electronic board.
The 1.4 A14NET series unit with a turbocharger attached to the exhaust went to the Cruz after the 2013 restyling and is rarely found (about 5% of cars). The engine has a service life of 250-300,000 km, timing chain drive and hydraulic valve compensation.
Very sensitive to oil quality. Due to the explosion, piston rings and parts can be damaged. And from poor-quality lubrication before 100 thousand kilometers due to stuck piston rings, oil consumption may occur.
After 100 thousand kilometers, in addition to valve cover leakage, failure of the air flow sensor, problems with crankcase ventilation, wear of the water pump and the upper guide of the timing chain may occur.
The GM 6T30 series six-speed transmission is not one of those smooth automatic transmissions. The service life before the overhaul is usually 200-250,000 km, although jerks and switching shocks may appear after 100-120,000 km. The weak points are the valve body with the solenoids and the torque converter’s locking linings.
The gearbox needs cleanliness and temperature of the working fluid – it is better to update it every 40-50,000 km. And to reduce the risk of overheating, you can install an additional cooling radiator.
Leaks often occur through pipes, box body gaskets and seals.
In the period from 2010 to 2014, the machine was changed frequently, so the younger the better.
The D16’s five-speed manual gearbox is reliable, although prone to leaking drive seals. Bearing release and clutch is not very long, which replacement may sometimes need to be done after 60-80,000 kilometers. After 100 thousand, the play can be seen in the difference, but it can be changed even without disassembling the box.
Cruise suspension is quite strong. Front aluminum levers usually do not require attention more than 100 thousand kilometers. As a rule, the first to fail are not the rubber joints attached to them, but the rear silent blocks. Shock absorbers on both axles can last the same amount of time (as long as the anthers are the same).
- Bearings and supports of assembled struts and hubs usually last 120-150,000 km.
- Two silent blocks of a simple rear beam can withstand more than 200 thousand kilometers.
On previous versions of fixing and power steering, the rack is quite reliable. But the steering pump can vibrate even before 100 thousand kilometers. At the first sign of trouble, it is better to wipe it immediately and renew the working water. After remodeling, several modifications began to have an electric amplifier, and usually attract little attention to themselves. The main thing is to make sure that the cover of the electrical connector is closed: moisture destroys the contacts.
Like many other General Motors models, the Cruze was known for brake system friction even with slight wear on the guide pins. It is best to clean and lubricate the unit every year. Another feature of the front brake systems are the polymer pistons in the calipers. Corrosion is not a problem, but plastic can begin to crumble over time after extreme heat. It is better to rest the pistol with special tools, otherwise they can be damaged. Front brake discs are often crooked and begin to wear after 30-40,000 km.
In general, Chevrolet Cruze is distinguished by the absence of major malfunctions in many parts and assemblies, except for the ineffective automatic transmission. A good picture is spoiled by a number of small problems, many of which the manufacturer has not eliminated. The least troublesome option is the rebadged, with the base 1.6 engine and manual gearbox.
