How the Buick GNX Proved You Don’t Need a V8 to Be a True Muscle Car

In the 80s, every automaker went with V8 engines to increase power. Buick took their chances and upgraded the V6 instead.

Only 26 Miles on This Beautiful Buick GNX

Buick cars from the 1980s are classics, and the Buick Grand National and GNX, in particular, stood out as huge successes. These cars weren’t just built for speed; they were designed to make a statement. The GNX, with its turbocharged engine and matte black finish, represents the high points of Buick’s performance capabilities of the era. It’s a car that deserves to be off the road, not locked in a garage.

The 1987 Buick GNX we found is #450 of 547 produced for the model year, and has only been driven 26 miles. The car is powered by a turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 with a factory-rated output of 276 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque. The engine was modified by ASC/McLaren with a Garrett T3 turbocharger, which is music to our ears, but unfortunately, it spent most of its life in long-term storage. The engine is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels.

This classic beauty features jaw-dropping features such as a low-skid differential for those hair-raising corners, stylish 16-inch spoked wheels, wheel arch flares that scream “look at me”, side vents, a spoiler in the back, air conditioning to keep you cool, and cruise control for those lazy Sunday drives.

The iconic Buick GNX is reimagined as a slimmed-down all-terrain sedan with modern V8 performance in our unique digital concept.

The Buick GNX of Your Dreams

The Grand National Test, or GNX, was updated in partnership with McLaren Performance Technologies/ASC as a grand finale to the production of this iconic model. All 547 models were finished in sinister black, making them the Darth Vaders of the automotive world. The GNX is loaded with unique cosmetic touches, including heated exhaust vents, composite wheel arch flares, a three-part rear spoiler that gives it a lift-ready look, and GNX badging, so everyone knows it’s you drive something special. . It also features practical details like a rear spoiler, sport mirrors for that sporty look, and dual exhausts to let the engine roar.

The interior is also well-kept, and you get front bucket seats with Turbo 6 embroidery and a rear bench trimmed in black and sand-colored fabric. The rest of the dash is typical of the times with a leather-wrapped steering wheel. There is also a plaque mounted on the dashboard identifying this as GNX #450. The only disappointing thing about the interior is the five-digit odometer showing 26 miles.

While this classic car with only 26 miles is a rare find for a Buick, it’s not unique in the world of rare low-mileage cars. Collectors often come across gems like a barely driven 1967 Corvette Stingray, a 1985 Porsche 911 with less than 100 miles, or a 1970 Dodge Challenger that has spent most of its life in a climate-controlled garage. These cars, like the GNX, are marvels of engineering and design, and while they may be pristine in their preserved state, the true joy of these machines lies in driving them and experiencing their full potential on the open road.

So, if you want to save this beautiful Buick GNX from years to come of being abandoned by another collector, this is your chance to find a rare classic Buick and enjoy it to your heart’s content. The car will be auctioned soon, and hopefully the next buyer will give it the love it deserves – to be driven.
