ANAHEIM – It was 1 a.m. in Alabama when prospect Sam Bachmann got the call that he was going to the Majors for the first time to join the Angels bullpen after six starts with Double-A Rocket City. But that didn’t stop him from calling his friends and family to wake them up with the news.

Bachman, who is the 9th overall pick in the 2021 draft and the No. 1 prospect. 5 MLB Pipeline clubs, learned of his promotion a few hours after Wednesday’s game and his contract was made official before Friday’s game against the Marlins. He started out on his own in the Minors but will give the Angels a much needed strong hand for relief.

“Yeah, I called them all and they all answered,” Bachman said with a smile. “At first they were worried, but they were happy to hear that I got a call. Not many people slept that night, including me. But it’s amazing and it still feels amazing.”

Bachman made his debut in the Angels’ 6-2 loss to the Marlins at Angel Stadium, striking out four while allowing one run on four hits and two runs. The Fishers, Indiana native has 11 family members and a girlfriend who attended for the first time.

“I’m really excited,” Bachman said. “It was a nightmare, and I was just trying not to fall in there going up the hills. But it was a great experience.”

Backman, 23, comes to the Majors after posting a 4.48 ERA with 74 strikeouts and 49 walks in 84 1/3 innings in the minors over the past three seasons. Serving as the Cubs’ starter, including this season, he posted a 5.81 ERA with 29 strikeouts and 20 walks in 26 1/3 innings.

Bachman’s total swing is worrisome, in part due to his difficulty adjusting to the pre-cheat test balls used in this year’s Double-A. However, the Angels and other club hitters had him do bullpen games and side sessions with major league ball to prepare him if they were called up.

Bachman’s fastball averaged 96.3 mph in his debut, mixing in sliders and cutters. Manager Phil Nevin liked what he saw from Bachman but indicated he needed better leadership going forward.

“He’s good, but he has to throw fastballs to strike out,” Nevin said. “I like things. I know there’s a lot of adrenaline, a lot of nerves, a lot of family here tonight. So on the first day in the big league I put the result aside.”

The decision to call up Bachman was another tough one for the Angels, as they also had rookie Zach Neto at shortstop and Chase Silseth in goal. Neto, 22, was the club’s first choice last year and Silseth, 23, 11 in 2022.

“I think we’re going to be aggressive when we get our best team, our best product on the field to compete and win,” said Nevin. “We have organized ourselves after 50 odd matches where everything we wanted was in front of us to achieve. We are always looking for ways to list the best players.”

Nevin added that Silseth and Bachman could start again in the future and it is more about the needs in the bullpen. The Angels have been looking to fill the gap to catch Matt Moore and closer Carlos Estevez, and they think Selseth and Bachman can help with that.

“There are a lot of guys who go to the big leagues and learn how to play here and end up starting,” said Nevin. “It doesn’t rule out the possibility. We’re just doing what we can to win the game right now. And that’s how we feel.”

The biggest change will be his routine, Bachman said, as he has never been comfortable outside of a few practice games this season. But he says he has learned from experience and will rely on veterans and Celsth for advice.

“I’ve talked to a lot of people here about procedures and changing them,” says Bachman. “I think there’s definitely going to be a good process. And talking to Chase as well, he stepped into the position and it helped a lot. I’m going to follow him, see what he does. I think that’s going to help a lot.”
