REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Two Indonesian men Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo/Marcus Fernaldi Gideon are not too worried about their current position, which is no longer ranked number one in the world. Kevin/Marcus dropped from world number one on 20 September 2022 after 214 consecutive weeks at the top of the BWF rankings.
The duo, nicknamed The Minions, were pipped to second place by the Japanese Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi. However, Kevin/Marcus admitted that they had no problem with that. According to them, the most important thing is the appearance and results in each competition.
“We want to focus more on the results of each tournament, we don’t want to think about the rankings, it’s the same thing. After all, if the results are good, the rankings will also go up automatically,” Kevin told the media. in Jakarta, Wednesday (7/12/2022).
After witnessing a total of 226 weeks at the top of the BWF rankings, the Indonesian men’s duo have dropped in performance and are yet to win a single title this year. This situation together with Marcus also continues to recover from injuries so they have missed the championship several times.
Of the 15 tournaments they have played this year, their best achievement was a runner-up finish at the 2022 Denmark Open last October after losing to their national team teammates, Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto. Friends last climbed to the top of the podium at the 2021 Indonesia Open in Bali.
Kevin also accepts the competition men twice The world is becoming more and more difficult including for fellow Indonesian men. “Now all the opponents are getting better, so we must be able to strengthen ourselves,” said Kevin.
“Nope, we are not at all attracted to other Indonesian men. In fact, the more enemies there are, the more attractive and enthusiastic we are. So the motivation is high because there are many competitors who are hunting them,” Marcus added.
Kevin/Marcus are set to return to the BWF world tour series next year, starting with Malaysia Open on January 10-15 2023, India Open (January 17-22), and Indonesia Masters 2023 (January 24-29).
