Former Formula 1 driver Mika Hakkinen says the Monaco circuit is not a good fit for Red Bull.
After the first five races of the season, it should come as no surprise that Red Bull was seen as the favorite to win in Monaco.
However, Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko said that they did not enter the weekend as favourites, because the circuit structure did not suit them.
Hakkinen sees Red Bull as the favourite, but thinks there could be surprises.
“Based on the results so far, you can expect Max Verstappen and teammate Sergio Perez to be favorites this weekend, but I think there could be some surprises,” the Finnish driver wrote in his Unibet column.
“This track is not suitable for the advantage of high speed and aerodynamic efficiency that Red Bull is suitable for.”
“On the other hand, Ferrari dominated qualifying last year and they hope to repeat that.”
“I’m sure Leclerc will push it further. His teammate Carlos Sainz was also second last year, his level in Monaco is clear.”
“Also, Fernando Alonso is currently third in the championship, he has been on the podium four times in the first five races and he is at a great level, it is exciting to see that, the news that Honda will collaborate with Aston Martin from 2026. It will give the team strength bigger.”
“For Mercedes, Monaco is not a good circuit to try and develop a new design philosophy.”
“But if these changes allow Hamilton and Russell to bond better with the car, they could be a great step forward on a track where loyalty will be rewarded.” say.
