The author Georgi Gospodinov is this year’s big winner Booker International Prizethe most important literary award, for his novel “Refuge of Time” (Времеубежище)translated into English by Angela Rodel. He is the first Bulgarian author to be awarded the Booker International Prize.
The award comes with a £50,000 cash prize shared jointly by the book’s author and translator, giving them equal recognition. The announcement of the grand winner was made by the chairman of the committee, the author Leïla Slimani, Tuesday 23 May 2023, at the Sky Garden in London. Leïla Slimani says among others: “It is a good novel about Europe, a continent that needs a future, where the past is rebuilt and nostalgia is poison. It gives us a perspective on the fate of countries like Bulgaria, which have found themselves in the middle of an ideological conflict between the West and the Communist world.”
“Dwelling of Time” has also been awarded in 2021 with the Bulgarian State Fiction Prize as well as the Strega Europeo Prize, the most important Italian literary award. The book is published in Greek by Ikaros publications, translated by Alexandra Ioannidou.
