Bisnis.comJAKARTA – Ford Motor Co. has announced an agreement with Tesla Inc. to allow electric vehicle owners access to more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers in North America by early 2024.
According to Reuters on Friday (26/5/2023), the partnership between the two car giants has made Ford the first major manufacturer to use Tesla’s electric charger.
This partnership will give Ford access to the Internet supercharger the fastest in the United States.
According to analysts, the availability of charging stations is one of the biggest challenges in expanding the use of electric vehicles.
Last November, Tesla said it would introduce its payment model to other automakers.
A device designed by Tesla will provide access Integrated Charging System Ports (CCS) or Ford’s integrated charging system for electric vehicles equipped with Tesla’s Supercharger V3.
It is estimated that in 2025 Ford will also start offering Tesla charging rates for future electric vehicles.
“The idea is that we don’t want the internet supercharger Tesla became like a walled garden. We want to be something that supports electrification and sustainable transportation in general,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in a Spaces Twitter chat with Ford CEO Jim Farley.
Tesla has 17,711 superchargers, about 60 percent of all fast chargers in the United States, and can add hundreds of miles in an hour or less.
On Thursday (25/5/2023), Farley said about the collaboration through the Twitter Spaces conversation. His conversation with Musk lasted about half an hour on Twitter Spaces without any technical interruption.
“On the infrastructure side, I think there’s room for collaboration between the auto companies, which is unusual for us,” Farley told a Morgan Stanley conference.
He also added that his party had to start cooperating in a way that has never been done with new electric car companies that have been around for a long time.
“I think Ford’s overall strategy with electric vehicles is very good. The electric F-150 is very much needed,” Musk wrote on Twitter earlier this month.
At the same time, Musk has supported Ford for the losses of its electric cars.
“It’s always tough with margins for a new car line, especially when there’s a big change in technology,” he said.
