Haas has completely changed its approach with two drivers in recent years, if in 2021 the bet was two young drivers, in 2023 the American team chose more experienced competitors by hiring Nico Hulkenberg to join Kevin Magnussen.
The German had not won the title since the end of 2019 when he left Renault. In 2020 and 2022, Hulkenberg returned to the grid to contest four races as a Racing Point/Aston Martin reserve.
Nico’s performance has been remarkable, the German is ahead of his team-mate in the drivers’ championship, P11, with Magnussen in 17th. That good time impressed Haas boss Guenther Steiner.
“Nico, coming back after three years as a reserve driver, came back very strong. I expected him to be strong, but I expected that to happen later,” Steiner said in an interview on the F1 Nation podcast.
“I was really surprised, he’s been really strong. So I don’t know, if he’s peaked or if there’s more to come, I mean I’d be happy if there’s more to come out, but I think he’s doing a great job.”
