Aston Martin coach Mike Krack has said his team needs to be ready to take advantage of any opportunities that arise in the 2023 Formula 1 season should Red Bull struggle.
Red Bull have won all six races so far in 2023, most of them in style, with Max Verstappen winning four times and Sergio Perez winning twice.
Thanks to Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin finished as the top non-Red Bull team in four of the six events, followed by Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in Australia and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in Azerbaijan.
Alonso recorded his and Aston Martin’s best result of 2023 in Monaco when he finished second to Verstappen.
“Krack said: “There will be an occasion where maybe Red Bull has a reliability issue or something. The season is long, so maybe there are opportunities, and we have to be the ones who are there.”
“So far we have achieved that many times, and we always have to be 100% to be there, and then the results come. We saw that the Red Bull car was not there this time, and therefore you should be in second place,” he said.
Krack remains hopeful of being in contention for the Spanish GP podium this coming weekend. “We need to see how the others’ updates work. Ferrari tends to be very strong in Barcelona. We will do our homework and I think we must be competitive”, concluded the boss of Aston Martin, who holds P2 in the classification of constructors with 120 points scored.
