McLaren had a good Friday in free practice for the Formula 1 Monaco GP, with Lando Norris taking 7th and 5th in FP1 and FP2 respectively, but Oscar Piastri was only 17th and 18th.
Andrea Stella, Team Principal: “We had a good first day in Monaco, despite some issues on Lando’s part that reduced his playing time in FP2. Also, we are working on our program as planned. Lando got a good pace early on because of low fuel. Oscar, making his first visit to Monaco in an F1 car, was learning more and more lap after lap. From here we will do all the usual Monaco things, keep improving every detail with the drivers and inside the car, let’s do our best to execute our plan well and try to set a good qualifying and race time.
Norris: “Good day, and it’s great to be back. It’s amazing to be back in a car here in Monaco. It looks crazy, as always. It was fun on the track and relaxed very quickly, which is always important here. We made some changes from FP1 to FP2, which went in the right direction, and of course we got a bit more out of the car, so we will continue to try to explore in that direction, to see if we can improve more tomorrow. It was a good Friday and I probably feel better than I have in the last few weeks.”
Piastri: “The first day in Monaco in an F1 car. It was a very difficult day because it’s a very difficult circuit and I have a bit of work to do on my part, but that’s what happens when you get close. I think I got the best in every corner at least once, I have to put them together in one lap now. We’ll keep working through the night and see what we can do. The car seems to be in a good position, but the field is very close again, so a small improvement can have a big impact. We’ll keep pushing and try to open up more speed tomorrow.” , concluded the Australian.
