Surakarta, Beritasatu.com – Indonesia is predicted to be able to produce 1 million electric cars or electric cars (electricity car/EV) four-wheelers in 2035, when the national automobile industry enters its first century. The increase in production, which has reached almost 666 times from the 2022 production of only 1,500 units, is supported by the ongoing transformation of the automotive industry, including electric motorcycles, which leads to electric cars.

Rich nickel resources as raw materials for electric vehicle batteries further strengthen Indonesia’s position to achieve self-sufficiency in the electric vehicle ecosystem and become one of the key players in the global EV supply chain. It’s just that, to achieve that goal, all cooperation is needed stakeholders to accelerate the development of the battery industry and ecosystem, so that the popularity of electricity distribution in Indonesia continues to increase. These were raised in a national seminar titled 100 Years of the Indonesian Automotive Industry, Realizing Indonesia’s Net-Zero Emissions (NZE) which was held at the University of Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta campus, quoted. The Daily Investor Tuesday (7/3/2023).

“At the beginning of the 1970s, we imported cars to promote the economy, then we replaced imports with domestic production in the 1980s in the second phase. Then in the third stage we started to put components into the 1990s, and in the fourth stage we started to export.
cars with a production base for export. Only in the next phase will we transport high-end vehicles, including electric vehicles. And we must be able to maintain this strong position,” PT Toyota’s Director of External Relations said
Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) Bob Azam in Solo, Tuesday (7/3/2023).

Bob said that the automotive industry is a sector that has a solid foundation and is the pioneer of industrial development in Indonesia. But on the other hand, Indonesia has a big challenge to be at the forefront in the supply of electricity for cars
in the ASEAN region, competing with other major auto industry countries such as Thailand and Vietnam.

With the world’s largest nickel reserves, according to Bob, Indonesia has the potential to become a major producer of nickel-based finished products, such as batteries for electric vehicles. It means, Indonesia has a chance
which is good for promoting the battery industry which is one of the main ecosystems of the electrical industry.
“Toyota itself is committed to supporting the development of this battery market through a strategy multi-channel strategy where Toyota introduces and offers various technologies for electric vehicles that use batteries for consumers in Indonesia, from hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), battery electric car (BEV), up to fuel for electric vehicles (FCEV),” said Bob.

Khoirunurrofik, a scholar at the Institute of Economic and Social Research at the University of Indonesia (LPEM UI), said that the production of electric vehicles in Indonesia is targeted to reach 400,000 units in 2025 and increase to 600,000 units in 2030, reaching 1 million units. in 2035.
