Mercedes-Benz luxury cars – including the $400,000 AMG GT – have been recalled for a fault that could see the car burst into flames.

Transport safety officials have called for the immediate recall of nearly 2,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles, warning that a manufacturing defect in some of the luxury company’s models could pose a serious safety hazard to road users.

Some of the company’s AMG GT, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, SL, CLE, EQE and EQS models were recalled on Monday following the discovery of a manufacturing defect.

‘Vehicle management systems connected to the fuse box can fail,’ the Australian government’s Department of Transport said in its recall alert.

‘If this happens, it can cause sudden loss of power and/or vehicle fire.

‘A sudden loss of power while driving, or a vehicle fire, can increase the potential risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, bystanders and property damage.’

The annual rate for the 1,983 vehicles affected is 2023-24.

Customers are advised to check their vehicle identification number to see if they are affected and, if so, contact their nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer to have the fuse box replaced.

Replacement will be free of charge.

Mercedes-Benz is a major luxury brand and its S-Class sedans have come to symbolize a luxury driving experience, with upgraded cars selling for over $200,000.
