A family SUV
He was born in 2018, the C5 Aircross quickly converted into a hybrid. From 2020, the Citroën family SUV released its version of the powertrain Stellantis, a place under the hood of several models, namely the 225 hp version in traction. This choice paid off as, in a good context, the C5 Aircross 225 hybrid quickly ascended to the hybrid car podium (all models combined) in France, behind its cousin, Peugeot 3008.
Today, the situation has changed. The new market is collapsing and that of plug-in hybrids is getting stronger with a drop of 8% recorded since the beginning of 2022. This trend will increase until the end of the ecological bonus of €1,000 scheduled for July 1, 2022 and the next Euro. Level 6, from 2025, a calculation that will multiply 2.5 times the C02 emissions of plug-in hybrids, which will end all current Government subsidies (premium for conversion, etc.). So, if you want to take advantage of all the benefits, you’ll have to hurry.
The C5 Aircross Hybrid 225 gets the same update as the regular hot version. He replaces his funny face with rounded lines for a more daring design. On board, the changes are also significant. The dashboard has been redesigned to accommodate a larger touch screen, 10 inches compared to 8 before, with space at eye level. Unfortunately he does not have the right to the latest operating system of the group Stellantis. Its resolution is excellent but remains slow to use. He also receives more information about the hybrid. The French keep the presentation neat and the plastic good.
C5 Aircross hybrid 225 prices will increase by €1,800 during the redesign, and the entry ticket is set at €41,750 in Feel finish, full equipment level (see next page). “Attractive” price compared to its competitors, Peugeot 3008 (€45,600) and Hyundai Tucson (€45,250) plug-in hybrids. Rent starts at €403/month over 48 months for an annual mileage of 10,000 km, including warranty and maintenance, after an initial tax of €8,389.
The hybrid transition ultimately has little effect on the functional aspects. The Frenchman holds his three back seats, sliding back. However, we would have liked more leg room. Only the trunk volume is penalized because of the battery. It goes from 580 liters for the thermals to 460 for the hybrid that can be charged with a room for storing cables under the floor, which is still suitable for families. It is possible to add up to 600 liters by folding the bench seat (by 15 cm) forward.
The hybrid system has not changed during the redesign. It is still a combination of a 4-cylinder petrol engine, 180 hp 1.6 Puretech and an 80 kW (110 hp) electric motor mounted on an 8-speed gearbox. The latter is powered by a 13.2 kW/h lithium-ion battery pack. In total, maximum power reaches 225 hp and torque 360 Nm. Everything is sent to the front wheels. In 100% electric mode, the C5 Aircross hybrid offers a range of 55 km according to the WLTP cycle, which authorizes an ecological bonus of €1,000 until July 1, 2022. Note that the electric mode can work alone until 135 km/h.
We did this test entirely in “hybrid” mode, which will be used in most cases. Well settled in the big soft seats from the “Advanced Comfort” program, it is in the silence of the cathedral that the C5 Aircross soars. From the start, the car invites you to drive well, quietly and comfortably. When a warm engine wakes up, it means that the need for torque is felt (or that the battery is flat). In practice, you will never have the feeling of having 225 hp under your right foot, however you will have enough resources to ensure it in all situations (passing, accelerating for a long time). The electric power in particular provides a maximum torque of 360 Nm, almost making people forget the 1,745 kg of the machine.
We saw an average fuel consumption of 3.9 l/100 km before draining the battery. A good score that is possible to improve thanks to the presence of mode B on the gear lever, which is regenerated on lifting the foot. Once the batteries are “flat” – in fact there is always a reserve of energy to work in a simple hybrid – the consumption doubles to 8 l/100 km, thus the essential importance of frequent recharging if you want to pay off your purchase. In this regard, charging time is between 2 hours in a wall box with the Mode 2 cable supplied as standard and 7 hours in a household socket via the 3.7 kW on-board charger. Through the “My Citroën” app to download to your smartphone, you can manage the charge remotely, schedule charging times (off-peak hours) or even turn on the heating function in the morning before getting into your car. Finally, it should also be remembered in mind that the capacity of the fuel tank loses 10 liters compared to the heat due to the area of the battery.
The excess weight resulting from the hybrid forced the engineers to adjust the suspension. Despite this, the C5 Aircross is one of the few hybrid SUVs to maintain a very high level of comfort. Slightly enhanced in compression than the internal combustion version, the humidity remains with continuous circulation, mainly due to the presence of hydraulic stations, also from the Citroën Advanced Comfort program”. Rides in the C5 Aircross hybrid are even more pleasant because they are quieter thanks to the laminated glazing offered as standard.
