The camshaftless engine, a prototype of which was introduced last year by the Swedish sports car manufacturer Koenigsegg, is finally going into mass production. This engine that will be used in the Qoros 3 model, introduced at the ongoing auto show in Guangzhou, China and designed by the Qoros company with the European market in mind, looks impressive and will be available for sale. after the tests are completed.
The engine without a camshaft in the Qoros 3 model has a volume of 1.6lt and is assisted by a turbocharger. Although the consumption value of this engine, which has a power of 234ps and a torque of 320nm, has not yet been announced, it is said that it consumes 15% less fuel than its counterparts. The fact that this engine will go into mass production is indeed an important development and it is likely that it will spread to other products in the short term. A camshaftless engine, which will pave the way for the use of many different internal combustion engine technologies in a more comfortable and efficient way, could pave the way for a more efficient variable timing system. We hope that many different automakers will start using this system in no time.
How does an engine without a camshaft work?
The engine, which does not have a camshaft, does not have a camshaft that moves the valves that allow air to be taken into the cylinders and exhaust gases. Today, all internal combustion engines have a camshaft that gets its movement from the crankshaft through a belt or chain, and the valves can be opened and closed this way.

Below you can see how a 4-cylinder double overhead camshaft engine works. The gears to which the shafts are connected get their movement from a belt or chain. Thanks to the camera on the shafts facing different directions, the valves open and close at different times. Today, there are timing valve systems that allow the valves to open and close at different speeds and at different times, but the valve technology is set here.

With this newly introduced technology, the camshaft has been thrown out of the system. In this system, the valves are controlled entirely by electricity and are opened and closed by pneumatics, i.e. air-driven springs. In this way, 2 cam gears, 2 camshafts and 1 chain or timing belt were removed from the engine system. As a result of all this, a weight reduction of 20 kg was achieved in the 1.6lt engine.

Thanks to this advanced system, it is said that the valves can now be controlled more easily. In this way, a variable timing system is obtained, in which each valve can be controlled separately. The 1.6lt turbo-petrol 400ps engine, which Koenigsegg had previously revealed as a prototype, could become a reality in the medium term, in our opinion. As a result, this unit, which produces 230ps of power in the Chinese brand Qoros for a type of testing purpose, can provide more power in the hands of car brands with experience in engines.

The advantages of an engine without a camshaft are as follows;
- 20kg to reduce the engine
- Reduce the amount of friction
- Quiet and vibration-free operation
- More efficient valve timing
- Simple cylinder installation process
- Low emission values
- low fuel consumption
- High power at low revs
- High torque at low revs
