“100 years of BMW Motorrad” is being celebrated in the form of the new R 12 nineT, the successor to the R nineT, which was launched precisely ten years ago at the occasion of BMW Motorrad’s 90th anniversary.
Somehow history repeats itself but continues to be written, as BMW did with the R nineT in 2013, so the new BMW R 12 nineT is a real, powerful, classic road that offers many options for almost unlimited customization and customization possibilities.
Dr. Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad said: “The R nineT and the customization concept introduced a new Heritage experience for the 90th birthday of BMW Motorrad and has become the cornerstone of our model range. The new R 12 nineT continues the heritage continuously. successful that surrounds BMW’s boxer engines with a more modern, leaner design language, greater freedom of customization and, ultimately, new and innovative technology.”
It was 100 years ago when the first BMW motorcycle – R 32 – was launched, which was already based on a flat-twin engine. The boxer’s unmistakable design, acceleration, exceptional power, unique sound and smooth performance made it synonymous with the legend of BMW motorcycles. With its air-oil-cooled boxer engine, the new R 12 nineT continues this fine tradition. The number 12 in the model name refers to the engine power, as with many models in the history of BMW Motorrad – and parallel to today’s R 18.
Even more than its predecessor, the new R 12 nineT combines the strong character of the boxer engine and the iconic style of the motorcycles of the past era with innovative technologies and a common philosophy that offers the rider a large number of customization options.
Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design at BMW Motorrad commented: “The design language is defined by the clean line of the tank/saddle/tail, in the classic /5 style or the legendary R 90 S of the 70s. At first glance, it becomes clear that the tank itself is a classical element of the BMW boxer, with a characteristic camber at the bottom end and normal contact with the knees. The new R 12 NineT also has side covers in the triangular area of the frame with an authentic Roadster look – another reference to BMW motorcycles of the 70s.”
Special attention to detail is also seen in the redesigned front fender, LED headlight with black surround and two circular instruments that harken back to the traditional style of other eras. As always, impressive customization options are offered from the BMW Motorrad Genuine Accessories collection. With that in mind, the new R 12 nineT also has an LED rear light integrated into the saddle, which now makes it easier to run a ‘short tail’.
