BMW has announced that Digital Key Plus is now also available for Android smartphones, with compatibility available in vehicles produced from November 2022.
A future remote software upgrade will extend the feature to Digital Key Plus-compatible vehicles built before November of last year.
Supported Samsung devices (running Android 13.1 or higher) are Galaxy S23+, S23 Ultra, S22+, S22 Ultra, S21+, S21 Ultra, Z Fold4, Z Fold3, Note20 Ultra (in Samsung Wallet markets: Bahrain, Denmark, Finland , France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Qatar). Additionally, supported Google devices (running Android 13.1 or later) are the Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 6 Pro.
BMW Digital Key Plus means customers with the above compatible devices can use it to unlock and lock their car and start the engine without even taking the phone out of their pocket. The car automatically responds when approaching or leaving like a standard car key with easy access functionality.
The smartphone with Digital Key Plus replaces the car key with extended functionality made possible by the use of Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology. It is a short-range digital radio technology for high data transmission that has precise tracking capabilities and maximum security.
The accuracy provided by ultra-wideband (UWB) ensures that the risk of relay attacks, where radio signals are jammed or blocked, is completely eliminated.
As of 2021 and until now, Digital Key Plus was only used with iPhone and Apple Watch.
