An agreement made with GM six years ago prevents the return of the Astra, Corsa and Vectra to the Chevrolet lineup in Brazil.

It is common that over time car manufacturers reuse the names of successful cars in new projects. It happened with Beetle, Tracker, C3. The hope of many is that Chevrolet will one day bring back its classics, such as the Corsa, but this is unlikely to happen.

It is that in 2017 GM sold Opel, its arm in Europe, in a plan to restructure the company around the world. For those unfamiliar with the brand’s global distribution, Opel was to GM in Europe what Chevrolet is to the rest of the Americas.

At the beginning of the last century, GM brought the Chevrolet brand to Brazil. In the 1970s, the brand realized that Brazilians were discovering more and the models sold in Europe. That’s when the brand introduced Opala, Kadett, Chevette, Corsa, Astra, Vectra and others. All Opel, but here with the Chevrolet brand.

The sale of Opel to the Peugeot group in 2017 was worth 2.2 billion euros. The agreement involves not only factories, but also all trademarks registered in the name of Opel. The Corsa, Astra and Vectra brands were created and followed by Opel.

In 2021 Peugeot joined Fiat and Stellantis was created. Opel is currently a brand of the Stellantis group. In Brazil, all Opel brands have passed under the umbrella of the Stellantis group. The Stellantis group is currently focused on making the Citroën and Peugeot brands grow in Brazil and although this is not happening it should not bring in other brands, such as Opel.

So it would be possible, for example, for Stellantis to re-produce the Corsa with Fiat or Citroën. Of course this is a crazy concept, but it is up to the reader to understand that even if crazy, it is possible. While the Chevrolet Corsa would not be possible.
